Sorrow's Furnace = Mines of Moria (LOTR)? - Guild Wars Forums

Does anyone notice the similarities of both?

1. Dwarven mines.
2. Lots o' strong monsters.
3. Lots o' goodies!

Thought I wasn't the only one.

1. Dwarves are dead & the good guys in Mines of Moria while Dwarves are alive and the enemy in Sorrow's furnace.
2. Anyone see resemblance between big badass Stone Summit iron golem thingy which comes out the wall in a burst of flames and the big badass flaming Balrog which comes at them in big burst's of flame?
3. No goodies in Mines of moria

just a whole lotta goblins and orcs and dead dwarves

Seriously though, you can take any part of Guild Wars and compare it to other fantasy settings - there will always be something that directly corralates to something else.

Like another LOTR example - Stormcaller. Remember in the Two Towers when the orcs were sieging the people of Rohan in their fort? They sounded the great horn which helped them fight the orcs in the end? And gee.. guess what you do to help end the siege of Rin? Blow Stormcaller which weakens the Charr..

Talk about a real ripoff of LOTR

Also lighting the torches on the mountain to warn the neigboring town in Borlis Pass, kinda like the whole Rohan, Gondor thing there

all fantasy games and stories are rip offs of either D&D or LOTR because they were the first and are completely unmatchable in greatness.

That was the main reason I loved Frost Gate mission so much was the lighting of the torches. I think that was the Frost Gate mission... either way you know what one is being talked about haha.

That statement is so true. Especially about LOTR. I'm not talking about the movies, i'm talking about the books. They were the best.(though the movies wern't bad either)

I never read any of the LoTR books or what not. I was/am still, a huge Terry Brooks fan. I have based my own writing losely off that influence.

Well if you've read Sword of Shannara you pretty much know the plot of LotR because, no offense, don't mean to flame or anything, and I actually like Terry Brooks too, but it's generally acknowledged that Sword of Shannara was pretty much a paraphrase of LotR with diff names.

To be fair to ANet, they have at least claimed that they refuse to incorporate Elves in their world because they are overused...

On the other hand, why don't they use "little people"? After all, the only mentioning of halflings are in D&D and LOTR.

I wish i could share the same view on LOTR. There are lots of similarities. But one really cool thing not mentioned....i never got to play LOTR....Im jammin on this one...I like playing much better than watching...

I think elves would be a nice addition....i havent played one of those. I think WE should have the choice of the build. After all, you dont have to use the character...just nice option.

DOnt get me wrong.....love LOTR.......Love guild wars.....No complaints with either. Regardless of similarities

The Shannara series is my fav and I never read the LoTR books to see any comparison between it and the Shannara books. Its possible there are connections, I can't say there isn't as I have no actual knowledge of LoTR books.

the ENTIRE Shannarra series' are freaking awesome!!!

I've never read the LoTR books but am well aware who laid the foundation for fantasy novels as we know them, but having ready Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan & David Farland......I'd always dreamt of seeing the stories on the big screen.....and LoTR series did it justice considering all of the book content they had to take into account.

Mavrik - Have you seen the LoTR movies? If you have then it's evident that Terry Brooks followed a blueprint:

2 smallish and unassuming characters are thrust into a struggle between ultimate good and evil. Initially guided by an all knowing Sage like character and later joined by a Rogue type, Elven hero, dwarven outcast and a Warrior type - Rogue=Aragorn, Elf - Legolas, Dwarf - Gimli, Warrior - Boramir and the ever present Sage - Gandolf.

Now lets look at Shannarra: Sage - Allanon, Rogue-they differ from book to book but typically are a Freeborn type person or Rover, Elf - typically from the Royal House of Ellesdils, Dwarf again they are always present and play dif roles per storyline. And of course the focal point of all stories, the unassuming/vanilla charater(s) - an Ohmsford who either by the inherited access to magic dating back to a relatives use of the Sword of Shannarra....are always asked/expected to take on a huge burden for the good of all kind.
